  • What is the difference between Standard Thickness and Slim Thickness 1911 Grips?
Our Standard Thickness grips run about 0.26" thick at the center of the grip. Our Slim Line Thickness grips run about 0.165" thick at the center of the grip. Thickness of magwell grips can vary slightly from these thicknesses as we match the height of the magwell. We use the convention of listing grips as Standard or Slim based on the above thicknesses for all the 1911 style grips we sell. Nearly all Para C6 guns and most Springfield EMP guns come from the factory with Slim grips but we build grips in either thickness for these guns.
  • How do I tell if I have Standard or Slim Grips on my 1911?
An easy indicator of grip thickness is to compare the height of the grips to the height of the plunger tube between the slide release and thumb safety on the left side of the gun. The standard height of the plunger tube is 0.16" tall. So if the grips are about the same height as the tube, you have slim grips. If the grips are taller than the tube by more than 1/16", then the grips are Standard Thickness.
  • Can I use my factory grip screws?
In most cases the answer will be yes. But there are exceptions. Following are several of the most common screw fit answers. Most 1911's - 1911's from Kimber, Sig Sauer, Smith & Wesson, Les Baer, STI, Ed Brown, Wilson Combat, Nighthawk Custom, Springfield Armory, Colt, Rock Island Armory, Metro Arms, Citadel, and nearly all other custom 1911's with standard thickness grips can use the factory screws. Some models from these manufacturers will have slim grips and may need to have new bushings and screws to go to Standard Thickness Grips. Alternately, Slim Line Thickness Grips can be installed by changing to our Slim Grip Screws and Bushings. Taurus PT-1911 Grips - Taurus uses a larger diameter grip screw. We build all Taurus grips to use the factory screws which have a larger diameter head than a standard 1911 grip screw. We can build them with standard counter bores for 1911 screws on request. Slim Grips can be installed on the Taurus with a change to our Slim Grip Screws and Bushings. Norinco - You can use the factory screws on Standard Thickness Grips but the threads on the bushings are not standard 1911 so you CANNOT install Slim Grip Screws and Bushings.
  • How do I fit my new grip to my gun?
Safely make sure the handgun is unloaded! Check the barrel, chamber, or cylinders to be certain they are empty and the gun is safe to work on. Prepare the frame. Remove existing grips and clean the frame and hardware. Gently, pull apart any grips that are two panels pinned together. If new screws were sent with the grip, use them. Otherwise, use the original screws. Install the grips. Use your hands to slowly press the new grips straight onto the frame. The grips should lay flush with the frame and the locator pins should slide easily over the pinhole. Do not use the grip screw to force the grips onto the grip frame pin. If the grips do not easily go over the grip frame pin, open up the edge of the pinhole with a knife and try again. Once the grip sits flush with the frame, tighten the grip screw until snug. It is important not to overtighten the grips! Now make sure there is no interference with the operation of the handgun. Do not load or fire the weapon until the new grips are snugly screwed into place and gun operation remains uninhibited. While fitting problems are unlikely, all frames have some variation! If you have any difficulties fitting the new grips to your gun, please call 1-888-877-4231 between 8:00 AM and 4:00 PM (Central) Monday through Friday for technical support. or email us at customfirearmproducts@gmail.com.

  • How do I know which grips will fit my Smith & Wesson gun?
To order a Smith & Wesson grip from us: 1) You will need to know whether your gun is a J, K/L, or N frame 2) Whether it has a round or square butt. The information below is to help you determine what you have. (See Chart) Smith & Wesson guns fall into three main frame categories: J - .38 Special and 9 mm. This is the smallest frame. K/L - .38 Special and .357 Magnum. This is the medium frame revolver. K & L Frames are interchangeable when it comes to grips. N - .41 and .44 Magnum. This is the large frame revolver. Within those three categories, your frame may be either square butt or round butt. Note: You will notice that some models may have been made in both a square butt and a round butt. If this is the case, then you will need to visually decide if your frame is round or square. If your Smith & Wesson model is a round butt, but you prefer the square butt look, consider one of our conversion grips! They are available in K/L and N frame sizes.

  • Why Build A Taurus PT-1911 Grip?
Taurus builds a Model 1911 but the Taurus gun has several differences that make a Taurus specific grip convenient. Our Taurus line of grips are modified from standard 1911 grips to account for the differences between the Taurus PT-1911 and standard 1911 grips. These grips are designed to be a direct replacement of the factory grips, using the factory screws. Here are the features that require changes to the grips: Larger Counter Bore to Match oversize Taurus Grip Screw Lowered Grip Edge to Clear Low Mounted Safety Lever Deeper Ambi Cut for Thicker Safety Retension Lever Wider Grip at Front Edge for Flat Taurus Frontstrap Our Taurus PT-1911 line accounts for all of these differences and makes the grips a true fit to the gun. We build Taurus PT-1911 grips in all of the materails we use for standard 1911 grips, including Exotic Hardwoods, Hardwood Laminate and Phenolics. The grips are shaped in the traditional 1911 style with the top of the left side panel slightly covering the plunger tube and the bottoms of the grip panel beveled. These grips leave the mainspring housing pin exposed unless the covered pin option is selected. These grips are built with a typical 1911 thickness that fully fits the hand without being overly thick. Grip thickness runs between .255" and .265" thick at the center of the grip. This thickness is slightly thicker than the plastic Taurus factory grips that run about .235" thick.
  • What is an Ambi Safety cut? What type do I need?
You will need an Ambi Safety cut if your gun is a 1911 and has a safety on both sides. Standard Ambi Safety cut- You can choose the Standard Ambi Safety cut if you have a Standard or Clone 1911 with the following exceptions: *Rock Island- You will need to select the Rock Island Ambi Safety cut if you have a Rock Island 1911. *STI/Taurus- You will need to select the Taurus/STI Ambi Safety cut if you have a Taurus or STI 1911. *Extended Ambi Safety- You will need to select the Extended Ambi Safety cut if you have an Extended Ambi safety on your pistol. *Kimber- Normally Kimber’s do not have the footer that requires the Ambi Safety cut even if they have a safety on both sides. If you want to be sure you can remove the stock panels from your weapon to see if there is a Thumb nail sized slit in the back of the right grip that faces the frame.
